Biography
Charlie Bates is a London-based composer, arranger and pianist working across jazz, orchestral and media music.His work has been performed and broadcast throughout the UK and Europe, with credits spanning television, studio orchestration and large ensemble writing. His music has featured on BBC Radio 3, BBC Four and Jazz FM, alongside placements for broadcasters and streaming platforms including BBC One and Netflix.Charlie has collaborated with ensembles including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, NDR Bigband and UMO Jazz Orchestra Helsinki, where he received an international composition award. Following the release of his debut album Silhouettes, he received the Dankworth Award for Jazz Composition, the Eddie Harvey Arranger of the Year Award and an Ivor Novello Award.In 2024, Charlie collaborated with vocalist Helena Debono on A Thousand Nights, a 12-track album featuring a 55-piece orchestra. The project was celebrated with a dedicated BBC Radio 3 broadcast and national airplay including Track of the Week on Jazz FM.Selected Credits
